Family Photography Session
What do you need to know!
I believe my clients hire me for a full experience and service, not just a photoshoot. It's my responsibility to provide them with the tools for an easy and successful experience!
Lifestyle family photography is all about capturing the genuine moments and emotions within a family's daily life. Here's the first tip to help you create beautiful and meaningful lifestyle family photos:
Connect with the Family: Before the photo session, take some time to engage with the family and grasp their dynamics, interests, and the story they want to convey through the photos. I use a customized questionnaire to do this and discuss styling and other crucial aspects with them!
WANT ANOTHER TIP?
For capturing natural family moments, follow these steps:
- Observe and Exercise Patience: Rather than directing the family, step back and observe. Let them engage in activities they naturally enjoy. Be patient and wait for those authentic moments to unfold. It may take some time for genuine interactions to happen.
Wardrobe has entered the chat!
Styling has become an integral part of my session planning, flow, and art. While wardrobe doesn't make or break the perfect moment, it can certainly enhance it!
Planning
I believe it's crucial to get to know and communicate with your client about styling from the beginning. Not everyone is into flowy, dreamy, boho dresses and fancy-pants! Have them define their style in their own words. Do they have favorite colors or patterns they'd like to incorporate? Gather as much information as needed and create a wardrobe designed specifically for them. On the flip side, CLIENTS, make sure you choose a photographer whose vibe matches your vision. Don't pick a photographer who specializes in neutrals and casual wardrobe if you plan to show up in a ball gown and suit. Both visions may get lost in translation, yours and the photographer's!
Offer your client options and ensure your selections are inspired by what your client has shared about their authentic style.
Styling Outfits for your upcoming photoshoot.
When it comes to styling families for a lifestyle family photo session, several elements play a pivotal role in creating visually appealing and impactful photographs. Each of these key elements - color, texture, pattern, and movement - contributes uniquely to the overall aesthetics and mood of the photos. Let's delve into their significance:
Color:
- Color sets the tone and mood of the photograph. Coordinated color schemes can create a harmonious look, while contrasting colors can add vibrancy and drama.
- Softer, muted colors evoke warmth and intimacy, while bold, vibrant hues convey energy and playfulness.
- Consider the surroundings and the intended emotional impact when selecting colors. Earthy tones work well for outdoor shoots, while brighter hues suit lively settings.
Texture:
- Incorporating textures in clothing and props adds depth and visual interest to the photographs. Textures can range from smooth and silky to rough and rugged, showcased through various fabrics and materials.
- Textures make the images more engaging and tactile to the viewer. Wool, denim, or knitwear, for instance, can add a cozy and intimate feel to the photos.
Pattern:
- Patterns can inject a dynamic element into the composition, making the images more visually stimulating. They can range from subtle and delicate to bold and graphic.
- It's crucial to balance patterns within the frame to ensure they don't overpower the subjects. Complementary patterns create unity, while contrasting patterns yield a striking effect.
Movement:
- Capturing movement adds liveliness and spontaneity to the photos, making them more dynamic and expressive.
- Encourage natural movements and interactions among family members to capture genuine emotions and create a narrative within the photographs.
- Movement can also be conveyed through flowing fabrics, wind-swept hair, or playful actions, adding energy and joy to the composition.
By strategically incorporating these key elements into the styling of the family photo session, you can create visually appealing and emotionally engaging narratives that reflect the unique dynamics and personality of the family.
Selecting the Right Location:
In addition to styling, choosing the right location for your family photo session is equally crucial. Here's why:
A well-chosen location can set the stage for a meaningful and visually stunning photoshoot. The background can enhance the mood and storytelling aspect of the photos. Whether you opt for a picturesque park, a cozy home setting, a vibrant urban backdrop, or a serene beach, the location plays a key role in conveying the essence of your family's story.
The environment can provide various opportunities for creativity. A natural setting can allow for candid moments among family members, while an urban location might offer a dynamic and energetic backdrop. Moreover, selecting a location that resonates with the family's interests and personality can make the photos more authentic and emotionally resonant.
So, when planning your family photo session, remember that the location is not just a backdrop but an integral part of the narrative you're creating. Consider the atmosphere, the lighting, and the emotional connection the location can evoke, making it an essential element in capturing the essence of your family's unique story.
