IN STUDIO MATERNITY PHOTO SESSION-(EDITING TIPS)
WELCOME
Today, we have an exciting tutorial that's sure to boost your Photoshop skills. We're diving into the world of color transformation, specifically, how to change the color of subjects using the Hue and Saturation adjustment layers. Whether you're a photographer, designer, or simply a creative soul, this technique will prove to be a valuable addition to your repertoire
How to Easily Change Colors in Photoshop Using Hue and Saturation Adjustment Layers
WHAT DOES HUE SATURATION DO IN PHOTOSHOP?
On its most basic level, the Hue/Saturation panel will affect your overall Hue, Saturation and Lightness. In other words: Changing the Hue will change the overall color of your image. Saturation will determine whether your image is highly saturated or completely monotone. And Lightness affects how bright or dark (under or overexposed) your image is. In the example below, I have bumped up the Lightness, and as you can see, it brightens ALL of the tones in the image: highlights, midtones AND shadows:
Let's get started!
Step 1: Add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer
First things first, open your image in Adobe Photoshop. Ensure you've selected the layer containing the subject whose color you want to change. Now, let's begin by adding a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer. You can do this by navigating to the "Layer" menu, selecting "New Adjustment Layer," and choosing "Hue/Saturation."
Step 2: Select the Targeted Adjustment Tool
After adding the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, make sure you've selected the layer mask in the Layers panel. Next, access the "Properties" panel to find the Hue/Saturation settings. Initially, you'll see the "Master" dropdown menu, but we'll revisit that shortly.
Step 3: The Targeted Adjustment Tool
For precise color targeting, click on the hand icon located beside the "Master" dropdown menu and then click on the colors within your image that you want to adjust. In our example, we clicked on the RED color of the dress, and the dropdown switched to "RED" because we're now targeting pixels within this color range. Additionally, the sliders on the gradient represent the targeted RED pixels.
Step 4: Adjust the Color
As you click and select your desired color range, the Hue/Saturation panel will update to display the specific color range you've chosen. You can now fine-tune the color change by adjusting the "Hue" slider. Watch how the color transforms in real-time as you drag the slider left or right.
Step 5: Fine-Tune Saturation and Lightness
To further refine your color change, utilize the "Saturation" and "Lightness" sliders. "Saturation" controls color intensity, while "Lightness" adjusts brightness and darkness.
Now, here's a valuable tip:
Step 6: Utilize the Colorize Option
Within the Hue/Saturation panel, you'll find the "Colorize" checkbox. Activating this option allows you to apply a single, unified color to your selected range. Adjust the Hue and Saturation sliders to fine-tune the colorization. This feature is particularly handy when aiming for a monochromatic or stylized effect.
But wait, there's more:
Step 7: Apply Additional Touches with Layer Masks
To achieve pixel-perfect precision in your color changes, consider using layer masks. Layer masks empower you to selectively paint in or erase color adjustments in specific areas of your image. Here's how:
- Select the "Colors" adjustment layer in the Layers panel.
- Add a layer mask to your adjustment layer.
- Invert the layer mask to black by selecting it and pressing Ctrl + I (Cmd + I on Mac).
- Choose a soft brush tool and adjust its size and opacity in the Brush settings.
- Start painting over the areas where you want the color change to be applied.
- As you paint with black on the layer mask, it will reveal the original colors underneath, masking the color change selectively.
- Fine-tune your layer mask by painting with black and white until you're satisfied.
By harnessing layer masks, you can precisely target specific areas for color adjustments, ensuring your creative vision is flawlessly realized.
