SUMMER ELIZABETH PHOTOGRAPHY
Hello there, fellow parents and newborn photographers!
Today, I want to share some of my tried-and-true tips and tricks on how to get a newborn to sleep during a newborn photoshoot. These techniques are not just for photographers; parents can also apply them to help their babies sleep peacefully at home.
As a photographer specializing in capturing those precious early moments, I've learned a few valuable lessons that can help you achieve those adorable, peaceful shots you've been dreaming of.
How to Get Baby to Sleep, like a pro! Baby Sleep tip.
10 Tips to get your newborn to sleep for photos
1. Centering Myself:
It all starts with a calm atmosphere. Babies are incredibly perceptive, and they can pick up on the energy around them. As a photographer, maintaining a sense of calm is essential. Remember, if you're stressed or anxious, the baby is likely to be too. The same goes for the parents; make sure they're relaxed and comfortable during the shoot.
2. Embrace the Power of Vibration:
Newborns are used to constant movement in the womb, so replicating that sensation can help soothe them to sleep. Try rocking, gentle wobbling, bouncing, or even patting the baby's bum. These subtle movements can work wonders in creating a peaceful atmosphere.

3. The Magic of a Shusher:
A shusher is a game-changer during newborn photoshoots. It mimics the comforting sounds your baby heard in the womb. Alternatively, you can use white noise apps on your phone. However, I prefer the shusher because it ensures no interruptions and has a timer for either fifteen or thirty minutes before automatically turning off.

4. Embrace Pacifiers
In addition, I've found that using a pacifier can be a valuable tool for keeping a baby calm during a photoshoot. Babies often find comfort in the soothing motion of sucking, and a pacifier can help replicate this sensation, keeping them content and promoting a peaceful sleep. It's just another trick in our toolbox to ensure that your newborn photography session is as smooth and enjoyable as possible for both baby and photographer.
My favorite pacifier, I have in my studio is the same kind you got on your first day at the hospital, the Philips AVENT Soothie Pacifier, 0-3 Months
5. Third Eye Massage:
Massaging the third eye area (the area top of baby nose between her two eyes) gently can be incredibly soothing for your newborn. Simply run your thumb or finger from the third eye position down the nose. This can encourage the baby to close their eyes and drift into slumber.
6. Keep Things Warm:
Babies are used to a warm environment in the womb, so maintaining a comfortable temperature is vital. In my studio, we keep the temperature around 36-37 degrees Celsius to mimic the womb's conditions. We use multiple heaters to ensure the baby stays cozy throughout the photoshoot.
7. Wrap Them Up Securely:
Newborns can find their flailing arms and legs unsettling. Wrapping them securely in a soft swaddle can help them feel safe and secure. This sense of comfort often leads to quicker and deeper sleep for the baby.
8. Minimize Wardrobe Alterations:
Even the most peacefully slumbering and content baby can get fussy when you start changing their clothes repeatedly. That's why I make it a point to restrict the number of wardrobe changes during a photoshoot. Instead, I achieve variety by utilizing headbands, wraps, or simple pants/skirts for most of the session. Towards the end, if the baby is still peacefully asleep, I may introduce one outfit that requires a bit more handling to put on and take off.
9. Appealing Scents:
While not scientifically proven, many photographers, myself included, have found that using essential oils in the studio can help relax newborns. We also wash our blankets with lavender and use lavender bags to keep them pleasantly scented. It's a small touch, but it can make a big difference.
10. Full Belly is a Happy Belly and make sure to burps the baby:
Just like us adults, newborns don't sleep well on an empty stomach. Ensuring that the baby is fed and content before the photoshoot is essential for setting the stage for a more peaceful and restful session. Additionally, it's important to ensure the baby burps after feeding to prevent any discomfort caused by trapped air in their stomach, ensuring they stay content and comfortable throughout the photoshoot.
