In between the busyness and exhaustion, there are some absolutely precious moments with your newborn that you want to capture.
Why book your newborn session in advance?
I know it can feel like your to-do list is never ending before the baby arrives and booking your newborn photography session may not seem high on the list. From picking out the nursery décor to checking out pediatricians, I know there’s a lot to do. However, reaching out when you are still pregnant is the best way to go when planning for that all-important newborn photography session.
I believe that the best way to find the right newborn photographer for you and creating that trustworthy connection with your photographer is consultations. I love setting up a time to chat over phone or zoom to meet with my clients because it allows us to meet before the big day, but allows us to discuss details and making sure that I completely understand your vision and answer any questions or concerns you may have.
5 REASONS YOU SHOULD BOOK YOUR NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION EARLY
The best time to schedule and book your newborn photos is while you are still pregnant. The big reason for that is because newborn photos take place in the first few weeks of your baby’s life.
- Ensure Your Photographer is Available: A photographer's schedule can fill up quickly, and only a limited number of sessions can be taken in a month. It's best to book early to ensure you get what you want.
In order to provide the best service to my newborn clients, I only take 5 newborn photography sessions per month. By booking early, you can secure a spot on the calendar and ensure that the perfect newborn photography timeframe of 7-14 days old.
Booking your maternity and newborn sessions with the same photographer makes the most sense. This is especially true if you have already worked with the photographer. There are several benefits to this, including:
- You already know and trust the photographer, and they are familiar with your preferences.
- The style for both sessions will be cohesive.
- Many photographers offer discounts when booking more than one session.
Regardless, I recommend booking your newborn photographer during your second trimester.
- Check it Off the List Before Baby Arrives: Removes the Stress: Becoming pregnant brings many new responsibilities and decisions, and the to-do list can quickly become overwhelming. Booking your session early allows you to check an important item off the list and put all the planning in the hands of the photographer.
Once the baby arrives, it can be easy to let important milestones pass by uncelebrated in the chaos of everyday life. Booking your session in advance helps relieve stress and ensure that your memories are preserved. It is also important to note that not all babies arrive on their due date, and some may arrive earlier. Booking your newborn session in advance helps ensure that you don't miss the optimal timeframe for newborn photography (5-14 days after birth).
-
Plan Financially: Babies can be expensive, and from diapers, clothing, hospital costs, and more, it is important to plan financially for your newborn session. By booking while you are still pregnant, you have several months to save for the photographer of your dreams.
-
Time Moves Fast with a Baby: Do not wait until your baby arrives to start looking for a newborn photographer. Your little one will never be this small again, and too many moms wait until the "perfect time" for photos, only to miss out because their kids have changed so fast. Booking your newborn session in advance ensures that you have the opportunity to be photographed with your baby at this stage.
Only 5% of babies arrive on their due date, and a healthy, full-term baby can be born at any time during a 5-week span.
When you book your newborn session, you are reserving a spot on the photographer's calendar based on your due date. The actual session is not scheduled until after the baby is born. The photographer will ask you to let them know when the baby has arrived, and then they will schedule the exact session date and time. This requires some flexibility from the photographer, which is why it is so important to book in advance. Photographers can only book a limited number of flexible sessions.
- Because You Deserve It: Mama, you deserve all of this and more. Your motherhood journey is a story that you will carry with you for a lifetime, and preserving memories from this story allows you to reflect on those beautiful moments for years to come.
My Baby Is Already Here! Is It Too Late To Book a newborn photoshoot
Nope! You can book your newborn session after the baby has arrived. The only difference is that you have more options if you book before baby's arrival. There are some photographers that will only work with fresh newborns. And then there are others, like me, who will work with older newborns.
For most newborn sessions, it is preferred to do it within 3 to 14 days after birth because they keep their fetal positions and a baby is at their most sleepiest state as if they were still in the womb .After this time period babies do not sleep as soundly and can get easily disturbed while posing for newborn pictures.
I have found that the optimal time to photograph a newborn baby is at 5-12 days old but definitely before they are out of their 2 week old stage. If babies are born premature there is some flexibility with this time frame.
However, if you did not plan ahead, OR IF YOUR BABY ALREADY HERE! do not be panic. It never too late to document your baby and I do offer newborn sessions up to four weeks after birth.
In general, older baby, baby from 4-6 weeks, the baby sleeps less. But they still look very similar to how they looked during the first couple of weeks. So wrap poses, or lifestyle newborn session is still possible.
note for Preemies baby--mama or baby may need to stay longer in hospital. Preemies have a lot of flexibility in general with this timeline. But if a preemie is home by weeks 3 - 4, it would be no different photographing them at this stage versus weeks 1 - 2.
