DO ALL BABIES SLEEP THROUGH THEIR NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION?
ASLEEP OR AWAKE!
Newborns are among the most unpredictable subjects to photograph, and the success of a session largely depends on how long and how deeply the baby sleeps.
The newborn stage during the first 2 weeks of age is typically when babies sleep for more of the day than they are awake. As a newborn photographer here in Phoenix, AZ, I often get asked how do I keep baby as sleep during the session, well let me tell you the secrets!
There are definitely a few tricks. I always send out the newborn preparation guide to each of my clients before their newborn session to help them better prepare for the session. Some tips include keeping baby awake for a couple of hours before heading into the session, then are given a full feed before heading over, with these preps ahead of session time, we are already in good stead for a sleepy session. The addition of a little warmth, some white noise & a comfy wrap often help baby settle and the session begins!
Well at this point, you would think that all babies that come to me for their newborn photography sessions would be as sleepy through all their session right?
Not exactly!
Not all babies sleep through their newborn session and that that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
Some babies are curious little things and they like to see everything going on around them!
Newborns operate on a schedule of their own, and sometimes no matter what you do, they are wide awake and not overly happy with being wrap, unwrap or placed in any sort of prop you have on hand.
While an awake and unhappy newborn can be frustrating, but the most important thing, I always reassure the parent is to try their best to stay calm and relaxed no matter how well the session seems to be going. Babies can sense frustration in the room and their surrounding.
So, when I have a wild awake babies during a newborn session, I go with the flow and capture those sparkling eyes, a few arm and leg stretches, and candid moments.
Normally, a typically session scheduled for around two to three hours to give the baby a chance to fall asleep and to allow for breaks to be fed, changed, and comforted. If the baby refuses to sleep, to help sooth and calm the baby down, I usually start with a few props where baby is wrapped and also I like to get the parents involved in a few photos at the beginning of the session. This way they can comfort their little one while also having beautiful portraits taken of their new family.
Meet Baby Lorenzo.
Can you tell he was mostly wild awake through out his newborn photo session. We feed, we wrap, and did many tricks , but he was wild awake 90% of time.
He was quit observant and like to look around but he was also calm and easy going even when he was wild awake.
Said Michelle, Lorenzo's mother!
"Coming from NY with my sister in law and brother both being professional photographers it was really difficult to choose someone to photograph my newborn. Summer was beyond knowledgeable about handling a newborn and making him feel comfortable in many different positions. Summer spent a lot of extra session time with us to make sure we got the perfect shot of my son, and even added in additional family shots! Summer is very detail oriented and it shows in every photograph. Summer’s pictures are truly a work of art and I will recommend her for years to come to my friends and family. We Can’t wait to celebrate many more milestones with you!",
Thank you so much, and it was my pleasure :)
Be sure to scroll all the way to the end of the blog post to see the family pictures.
Does he look much more like his daddy or mommy? what do you think :)
For his session, his mom wanted earth tones Brown, Neutral, and Mustard tone colors
